Most people have heard of Botox but may be unaware that other neuromodulator injectables are available. Dysport is one such option. Dysport softens facial expressions to reduce wrinkles in the brow area with no downtime and natural-looking results. This option can be a great alternative to Botox for many patients. Dr. Liz Damstetter, our filler expert, offers Dysport injections at Reserve Dermatology in Glenview, Illinois.
What is Dysport?
Dysport is an injectable that is intended to smooth frown lines (lines between the brows) by decreasing muscle movement that results in more intense facial expressions. It has also been shown to address severe muscle spasms, cervical dystonia, and upper and lower limb spasticity. Dysport utilizes the same fundamental ingredient as Botox, though the two products have slight variations in their formulas. Some patients may prefer Dysport over Botox due to their personal experience with the formula.
Who is a Good Candidate for Dysport?
Most patients looking to smooth frown lines between the brows are good candidates for Dysport injections. We also recommend you be in good overall health, have realistic expectations, and are a nonsmoker.
That said, if you are allergic to cow’s milk protein and have had allergic reactions to botulinum toxin products in the past (including trouble breathing), Dysport may not be right for you.
To determine if you’re a good candidate for Dysport, it’s important to discuss your medical history and all the medicines you’re on with your doctor or healthcare professional.

Uses for Dysport
Dysport is used to treat wrinkles such as glabellar lines (wrinkles between the eyebrows), crow’s feet, or horizontal forehead lines. Primarily, the product is intended to treat moderate to severe glabellar lines, which typically develop as you squint or frown. While Dysport will soften these facial expressions, modern and advanced injection techniques ensure that you will not have a “frozen” look and can still freely express yourself with fewer wrinkles or lines.
The Dysport Injection Procedure
Prior to your Dysport injections, Dr. Damstetter will first evaluate the treatment area and briefly review your medical history to ensure that the product is safe for you and will create the results you want. A majority of patients are good candidates for Dysport, but some health concerns could mean that injections are not your best option.
When you are ready to receive your injections, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed. As needed, topical numbing agents can be applied to keep you comfortable through the procedure. The Dysport will then be injected using a small needle. Dysport injections can be completed quickly, with the procedure lasting just 10-15 minutes on average.
Following your Dysport injections, you can return to your normal routine with no downtime. However, you should take some small precautions including avoiding sun exposure, drinking alcohol, or exercise and other strenuous activity to avoid unnecessary side effects like bleeding or bruising. You should also avoid rubbing or applying pressure to the treatment area to prevent the Dysport from migrating to unintended areas.
Dysport Results
After receiving Dysport injections, you can expect to see temporary redness or swelling at the injection site. These side effects are usually resolved within an hour. Some patients may experience muscle weakness but that’s very rare. Many patients will see results from their Dysport injections about two days after their appointments. You should notice smoother skin with reduced fine lines and wrinkles due to temporarily blocked movement in the facial muscles where Dysport was injected.
Dysport results are not permanent, as the muscle will eventually reestablish connection with the nerves. For most patients, Dysport results last an average of three to four months. As results begin to fade, it is recommended you schedule a repeat treatment to preserve your skin rejuvenation.
