Over time, collagen production slows and the face will lose youthful fullness as fat deposits shift downward. This results in a somewhat hollow look as well as wrinkles and folds in area like the cheeks or mouth. Restylane is a good option for patients who see these signs of aging and wish to create a rejuvenated look without surgery. Dr. Damstetter offers safe and effective Restylane injections for patients at Reserve Dermatology.
What is Restylane?
Restylane is a line of hyaluronic acid dermal fillers designed to reduce signs of aging or non-surgically augment areas of the face such as the lips. Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a naturally occurring substance found within the connective tissues of the skin. When injected, HA fillers like Restylane create a firm, hydrated, and youthful look. The Restylane family of products includes:
- Restylane
- Restylane Kysse
- Restylane Silk
- Restylane Lyft
- Restylane Refyne
- Restylane Defyne
- Restylane Contour

Uses for Restylane
Restylane has several cosmetic uses. Primarily, the products are used to restore lost volume in order to smooth wrinkles, fine lines, and folds in areas such as the cheeks, under the eyes, or around the mouth. Restylane is a good option for wrinkles such as marionette lines, smile lines or nasolabial folds, smoker’s lines, and more. It can also be used to add volume to the under eyes to reduce dark circles or hollows. Some patients choose Restylane injections for cosmetic changes outside of aging signs. For example, Restylane can be used to create fuller or more proportionate and symmetrical lips. It can also be used to add volume to areas like the cheeks, jawline, or chin.
The Restylane Procedure
Restylane injections are a fairly straightforward procedure and can be completed quickly. First, your skin will be thoroughly cleansed and, often, a topical numbing cream or local anesthetic can be administered to keep you comfortable through injections. When these steps are complete, Dr. Damstetter will determine the appropriate injection sites before injecting Restylane below the skin using a small needle or cannula (a blunt-tipped catheter). These steps typically take no more than 15-30 minutes to complete, depending on the number of injections or the amount of product required to achieve your goal results.
Restylane requires no downtime. However, it is important to avoid strenuous activity such as exercise, sun exposure, drinking alcohol, or applying makeup or other products to the treated area for about 24 hours. This helps avoid unnecessary bruising or complications such as infection. Following your Restylane injections, some mild bruising and slight swelling are normal and temporary side effects. Most patients can return to their normal routines immediately after receiving Restylane injections.
Restylane Results
Once swelling subsides, Restylane results are immediately noticeable. You will see reduced wrinkles or folds or improved volume and fullness immediately after receiving your injections. Final results are typically seen within the first week as swelling subsides.
Like other hyaluronic acid fillers, Restylane is not permanent. The body will naturally metabolize the dermal fillers over time. The overall longevity of your Restylane results will vary depending on the product you receive, the area you are treating, and your own metabolism. On average, Restylane results last between 6-18 months. Dr. Damstetter can give you a more specific outlook for your results during your appointment. Once Restylane results begin to face it is recommended to proceed with maintenance treatments to preserve optimal outcomes.
