Injectable dermal fillers are only growing in popularity, and Juvéderm is one of the most in-demand options available. This hyaluronic acid-based filler has a range of applications, from reducing signs of aging to creating more proportionate or symmetrical facial features. Dr. Damstetter and the Reserve Dermatology team offer Juvéderm injections in our Glenview, Illinois office.
What is Juvéderm?
Juvéderm is a popular hyaluronic acid-based filler. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring molecule found within the skin that creates a hydrated, lifted, and youthful look. Juvéderm products are available in several formulas, including Juvéderm Voluma XC, Juvéderm XC, Juvéderm Vollure XC, Juvéderm Ultra XC, and Juvéderm Volbella XC. Each of these formulas is specifically designed to treat a certain area of the face or common cosmetic concern.

Uses for Juvéderm
Juvéderm has many uses including addressing common signs of aging, non-surgically augmenting facial features, or resolving cosmetic concerns like scarring. Once injected, Juvéderm adds volume below the skin. This can be useful for reversing age-related volume loss in areas like the cheeks or temples or filling in wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, or smoker’s lines. The products can also be used to add volume to the lips or other areas to create a more symmetrical or balanced appearance. Finally, Juvéderm can be used to smooth atrophic scars such as acne scars.
The Juvéderm Procedure
Prior to your Juvéderm injections, Dr. Damstetter will mark the appropriate injection sites with a pen. As needed, a topical numbing cream can be applied prior to injections. However, Juvéderm’s formula includes a small amount of lidocaine, making injections comfortable and numbing cream unnecessary for most patients.
Once the skin has been prepped, the Juvéderm can be injected using a very small needle or cannula (a blunt-tipped catheter). This process takes no more than about 15 minutes to complete. After injection, Dr. Damstetter may massage the area to ensure even distribution of the product.
After Juvéderm injections, no downtime is required. However, Dr. Damstetter will advise you to avoid strenuous activity, excess sun exposure, applying makeup or other skin care products to the treatment area, or drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours. These steps will help you avoid unnecessary complications including bruising or infection. Some mild bruising or swelling are both normal after receiving Juvéderm injections, but these side effects are temporary and you will quickly see your intended results. Most patients can comfortably return to their normal routines immediately after receiving injections.

Juvéderm Results
Juvéderm results are noticeable immediately after the swelling subsides, which should take no more than a few hours. After you receive your injections, your skin should appear hydrated, rejuvenated, and youthful.
Juvéderm results are not permanent, as the body will naturally and safely break down the product over time. The longevity of your Juvéderm results will vary depending on the injection site, the specific formula chosen, and your own metabolism. Generally speaking, Juvéderm injections last between 1-2 years. Routine touch-ups are recommended to ensure continued pleasing outcomes based on patient areas of interest.
