Juvéderm®

Injectable dermal fillers are only growing in popularity, and Juvéderm is one of the most in-demand options available. This hyaluronic acid-based filler has a range of applications, from reducing signs of aging to creating more proportionate or symmetrical facial features. Dr. Damstetter and the Reserve Dermatology team offer Juvéderm injections in our Glenview, Illinois office.

What is Juvéderm?

Juvéderm is a popular hyaluronic acid-based filler. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally-occurring molecule found within the skin that creates a hydrated, lifted, and youthful look. Juvéderm products are available in several formulas, including Juvéderm Voluma XC, Juvéderm XC, Juvéderm Vollure XC, Juvéderm Ultra XC, and Juvéderm Volbella XC. Each of these formulas is specifically designed to treat a certain area of the face or common cosmetic concern.

Reviews

“I had a recent visit to Dr Damstetter’s clinic and would like to share my experience. I am a Navy vet(corpsman) and usually get seen at the VA but since we don’t have a Derm provider right now, I was fortunately sent out to her clinic to be evaluated. It’s a nice clinic in a nice area and was relatively easy to find. A pleasant Ms. Nancy at the front desk was helpful in completing the check-in process. Easy day. I did not have to wait long and was soon met by Dr. Damstetter’s assistant, who for classified reasons I will refer to as “Agent 8”. I am sure if she gets tired of providing excellent medical care, her slick-ninja skillset could get her a job with the CIA or MI6 maybe. Short story long, Agent 8 brought me back to the patient area, where I was introduced to Dr Damstetter, who was all the things you would want in a doctor: a knowledgeable provider with a great bedside manner. She gave me a thorough exam which did end up showing that I needed a minor procedure. No worries. I felt well taken care of throughout my visit. No one likes to have to see the doctor, but if you have a dermatological concern, this is a good place with good people who did great by me, and I am thankful to have been sent here.”

“Dr. Liz is truly the best dermatologist I’ve ever been to. She is attentive, kind, and genuinely cares about her patients and their overall skin health. I can not recommend her enough!!!”

“Wonderful experience here! The doctor took the time to educate me on a variety of cosmetic options and gave her candid opinion resulting in just the right amount of cosmetic adjustments! Her staff was delightful and attentive! I would highly recommend for general derm needs and cosmetic adjustments.”

“Dr. Damstetter was the first dermatologist I trusted to do my Botox. She is both knowledgeable and professional and did a fantastic job. I will be using her for any and all of my future needs.”

Uses for Juvéderm

Juvéderm has many uses including addressing common signs of aging, non-surgically augmenting facial features, or resolving cosmetic concerns like scarring. Once injected, Juvéderm adds volume below the skin. This can be useful for reversing age-related volume loss in areas like the cheeks or temples or filling in wrinkles such as nasolabial folds, marionette lines, or smoker’s lines. The products can also be used to add volume to the lips or other areas to create a more symmetrical or balanced appearance. Finally, Juvéderm can be used to smooth atrophic scars such as acne scars.

The Juvéderm Procedure

Prior to your Juvéderm injections, Dr. Damstetter will mark the appropriate injection sites with a pen. As needed, a topical numbing cream can be applied prior to injections. However, Juvéderm’s formula includes a small amount of lidocaine, making injections comfortable and numbing cream unnecessary for most patients.

Once the skin has been prepped, the Juvéderm can be injected using a very small needle or cannula (a blunt-tipped catheter). This process takes no more than about 15 minutes to complete. After injection, Dr. Damstetter may massage the area to ensure even distribution of the product.

After Juvéderm injections, no downtime is required. However, Dr. Damstetter will advise you to avoid strenuous activity, excess sun exposure, applying makeup or other skin care products to the treatment area, or drinking alcohol for at least 24 hours. These steps will help you avoid unnecessary complications including bruising or infection. Some mild bruising or swelling are both normal after receiving Juvéderm injections, but these side effects are temporary and you will quickly see your intended results. Most patients can comfortably return to their normal routines immediately after receiving injections.

Can I wear makeup after Juvederm?

It's recommended that you avoid wearing makeup for at least 12 hours after Juvederm injections.

Is Juvederm better than Botox?

Juvederm and Botox are different types of cosmetic injectables that are used for different purposes. If you want to fill in deep facial folds or add volume to the face, Juvederm is the better choice. Botox is a great option for fine lines and wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions.

Is Juvederm safe to use?

Juvederm should only be injected by board-certified and licensed physicians with extensive expertise and training in facial anatomy and aesthetic injectables. When performed with expert-level knowledge and safety measures in hand, Juvederm is extremely safe. Complications can arise from poor technique or lack of understanding of anatomy, safety precautions and overall aesthetic vision.

What is Juvederm?

Juvederm is a soft tissue filler made from hyaluronic acid. It is a synthetic substance that mimics the bodys naturally occurring hyaluronic acid which is responsible for retaining water and volume in spaces like the skin.

Whats the difference between Botox and Juvederm?

Botox is a neuromodulator, a molecule that is injected into the muscles to decrease contraction. This is particularly helpful for resolving forehead lines, frown lines, and crows feet. Juvederm is a hyaluronic acid filler that is injected in the skin to create volume, support the bone and fat structures of the face, and to reclaim youthful contours. Both are important for addressing aging skin concerns.

Which lasts longer Juvederm or Restylane?

There are multiple filler products in both the Juvederm and Restylane product portfolios. Specific duration will vary by the product and location of injection, but on average they last between 9 months and 2 years.

Who should not use Juvederm?

Patients with an allergy to lidocaine and a history of bleeding problems should not use Juvederm injections. If you have an active skin infection or are currently pregnant, we may ask that you wait to receive treatment.

What happens when you stop getting Juvederm?

Juvederm is made from hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in the body. If you stop getting Juvederm, the filler will be absorbed into your body and wrinkles will become noticeable again or your skin will revert back to its natural contours. Stopping Juvederm treatment will not age you or worsen wrinkle formation.

Am I too old for Juvederm?

Juvederm is a great treatment option for men and women over the age of 21 who want to turn back the clock on skin aging or enhance their facial features. We have many patients in their 60s who still love the results they get from Juvederm injections!

What are the pros and cons of Juvederm?

There are minimal risks with Juvederm so the “pros” or benefits far outweigh the cons. Patients can enjoy natural-looking results that develop quickly with almost no downtime. The main downside to Juvederm is that these results are temporary, but they still last 1-2 years on average and can be touched up as needed.

How painful is Juvederm?

Most patients do not find the Juvederm treatment to be painful aside from the initial tiny prick of the needle. After Juvederm injections, mild tenderness may occur but can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain medications if needed.

How long does Vollure last?

Does Voluma lift the face?

It is FDA-approved for use in the mid-face, cheeks, and chin.

Does Voluma look better with time?

Voluma lasts about 2 years in tissue. The initial improvement in appearance is usually seen immediately post-injection.

What are the side effects of Voluma?

Common side effects after Voluma injection are temporary swelling, bruising and tenderness. These symptoms will typically resolve within one week. The product may feel slightly bumpy and may be massaged into tissue gently to disperse. Rare side effects include the formation of hard lumps or nodules, or occlusion which is the injection into a blood vessel. If there is a persistent hard lump or discoloration and tenderness that worsens after injection, call your board-certified expert injector immediately.

Can Volbella be used for marionette lines?

Yes! Volbella can be used to reduce the appearance of marionette lines or lines that go from the edge of the lips to the chin.

How long does Volbella really last?

The results of Juvederm Volbella typically last about 12-18 months. You can get the treatment again to maintain the results.

How often can you get Volbella?

Volbella can last about 1 year in skin. The duration of effect will vary by individual, the total amount injected, and the area that is injected. Yearly touch-ups are generally expected to preserve desired effects.

What is Volbella good for?

Volbella is FDA approved for injection under the eyes to treat infraorbital, or undereye hollows, and the lips to cosmetically enhance lip size and shape.

Juvéderm Results

Juvéderm results are noticeable immediately after the swelling subsides, which should take no more than a few hours. After you receive your injections, your skin should appear hydrated, rejuvenated, and youthful.

Juvéderm results are not permanent, as the body will naturally and safely break down the product over time. The longevity of your Juvéderm results will vary depending on the injection site, the specific formula chosen, and your own metabolism. Generally speaking, Juvéderm injections last between 1-2 years. Routine touch-ups are recommended to ensure continued pleasing outcomes based on patient areas of interest.
