Many people have a “double chin,” or a small amount of excess fat below the chin which is perceived as an unflattering appearance. This often includes people at an otherwise healthy weight, as a double chin can be genetic. For these patients, Kybella injections can promote a sleeker profile without requiring surgery. Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable treatment that effectively reduces fat below the chin. Dr. Damstetter offers this option at Reserve Dermatology in Glenview, Illinois.
What is Kybella?
Kybella is a unique injectable designed to reduce the appearance of a “double chin,” known as submental fullness by physicians. The product uses deoxycholic acid, a naturally occurring molecule that breaks down excess fat cells in the area where it is injected. This permanently reduces moderate to severe fat below the chin for a more pleasing jawline contour. Because it require no incisions or surgery, it’s the perfect treatment for submental fat removal for so many patients.

Uses for Kybella
Kybella is intended to reduce the appearance of a double chin by destroying excess submental fat cells in the chin and neck treatment area. It is approved for patients who are 18 years old or older who see excess dietary fat below the chin despite otherwise being at a healthy and stable weight. Patients who are overweight may not be ideal candidates for Kybella, but could have this and other treatments or surgical procedures discussed during their consultation. During a consultation, Dr. Damstetter can evaluate your chin, jawline and neck area to help determine whether you are a good candidate for Kybella.

The Kybella Procedure
Before you receive your Kybella injections, Dr. Damstetter will review your medical history and determine whether the procedure is safe and suitable for you. Certain conditions, like swallowing or bleeding disorders, may disqualify you from treatment with Kybella.
After thoroughly cleansing the skin, Dr. Damstetter will mark the injection sites and may apply a topical numbing agent to keep you comfortable through the procedure. The Kybella injections can then be completed using a small needle. On average, about 20-30 small injections are made below the chin during a Kybella treatment.
Kybella patients will typically require multiple treatment sessions before you reach your best possible results, but the number of treatment sessions will vary. The product will gradually destroy the fat cells over time after each injection session, and you can receive up to six sessions total. Most patients will begin to see results within about 2-4 treatments. During your initial consultation, Dr. Damstetter will explain your treatment plan in detail.
After your Kybella injections, you can expect some soreness or sensitivity, swelling, bruising, redness, or numbness. The recovery process is otherwise straightforward, and you can return to your normal activities beginning the day after the procedure.
Kybella Results
Over time, Kybella will destroy fat cells and produce gradual results. You will continue to see improvements with each subsequent session. The deoxycholic acid will work to destroy the fat cells, which are then naturally and safely metabolized by the body. Once destroyed, fat cells will not return. This means that the new contour of your chin and neck area will have excellent longevity.
