Kybella®

Many people have a “double chin,” or a small amount of excess fat below the chin which is perceived as an unflattering appearance. This often includes people at an otherwise healthy weight, as a double chin can be genetic. For these patients, Kybella injections can promote a sleeker profile without requiring surgery. Kybella is an FDA-approved injectable that effectively reduces fat below the chin. Dr. Damstetter offers this option at Reserve Dermatology in Glenview, Illinois.

What is Kybella?

Kybella is a unique injectable designed to reduce the appearance of a “double chin,” known as submental fullness by physicians. The product uses deoxycholic acid to break down excess fat cells in the area where it is injected. This permanently reduces fat below the chin for a more pleasing jawline contour.

Reviews

“I had a recent visit to Dr Damstetter’s clinic and would like to share my experience. I am a Navy vet(corpsman) and usually get seen at the VA but since we don’t have a Derm provider right now, I was fortunately sent out to her clinic to be evaluated. It’s a nice clinic in a nice area and was relatively easy to find. A pleasant Ms. Nancy at the front desk was helpful in completing the check-in process. Easy day. I did not have to wait long and was soon met by Dr. Damstetter’s assistant, who for classified reasons I will refer to as “Agent 8”. I am sure if she gets tired of providing excellent medical care, her slick-ninja skillset could get her a job with the CIA or MI6 maybe. Short story long, Agent 8 brought me back to the patient area, where I was introduced to Dr Damstetter, who was all the things you would want in a doctor: a knowledgeable provider with a great bedside manner. She gave me a thorough exam which did end up showing that I needed a minor procedure. No worries. I felt well taken care of throughout my visit. No one likes to have to see the doctor, but if you have a dermatological concern, this is a good place with good people who did great by me, and I am thankful to have been sent here.”

“Dr. Liz is truly the best dermatologist I’ve ever been to. She is attentive, kind, and genuinely cares about her patients and their overall skin health. I can not recommend her enough!!!”

“Wonderful experience here! The doctor took the time to educate me on a variety of cosmetic options and gave her candid opinion resulting in just the right amount of cosmetic adjustments! Her staff was delightful and attentive! I would highly recommend for general derm needs and cosmetic adjustments.”

“Dr. Damstetter was the first dermatologist I trusted to do my Botox. She is both knowledgeable and professional and did a fantastic job. I will be using her for any and all of my future needs.”

Uses for Kybella

Kybella is intended to reduce the appearance of a double chin by destroying excess fat cells in the chin and neck area. It is approved for patients who are 18 years old or older who see excess fat below the chin despite otherwise being at a healthy and stable weight. Patients who are overweight may not be ideal candidates for Kybella but would have this and other treatments discussed during consultation. During a consultation, Dr. Damstetter can evaluate your chin, jawline and neck area to help determine whether you are a good candidate for Kybella.

Are Kybella injections painful?

Kybella injections are given with a very tiny needle into the fat layer. Due to a burning sensation when injected, a topical anesthetic is usually applied. Ice is used post-injection to soothe discomfort.

Can Kybella help turkey neck?

Kybella is approved for injection under the chin to dissolve excess fat and provide modest tightening of loose skin.

Does Kybella tighten skin?

Studies have demonstrated new collagen formation and an overall tightening effect after Kybella injection. This may take up to 3 months for full effect.

Does Kybella work on arms?

Kybella can be used off-label to contour areas with excess fat including arms.

Is one Kybella treatment enough?

Multiple Kybella injections are usually necessary to achieve desired outcomes.

Does Kybella really work?

Kybella has been FDA approved for the reduction in fat under the chin (submental fat). Many well-designed studies that included skin biopsies after treatment have proven that fat is reduced with deoxycholic acid (Kybella).

Can fat come back after Kybella?

The fat destroyed by Kybella will not return. With weight gain, you will gain increased fat stores proportionally throughout your body according to your current figure and chin appearance.

Can Kybella be used for belly fat?

No, currently Kybella is only FDA approved for injection under the chin.

The Kybella Procedure

Before you receive your Kybella injections, Dr. Damstetter will review your medical history and determine whether the procedure is safe and suitable for you. Certain conditions, like swallowing or bleeding disorders, may disqualify you from treatment with Kybella.

After thoroughly cleansing the skin, Dr. Damstetter will mark the injection sites and may apply a topical numbing agent to keep you comfortable through the procedure. The Kybella injections can then be completed using a small needle. On average, about 20-30 small injections are made below the chin during a Kybella procedure.

Kybella treatment will typically require multiple sessions before you reach your best possible results. The product will gradually destroy the fat cells over time after each injection session, and you can receive up to six sessions total. Most patients will begin to see results within about 2-4 treatments. During your initial consultation, Dr. Damstetter will explain your treatment plan in detail.

After your Kybella injections, you can expect some soreness or sensitivity, swelling, bruising, redness, or numbness. The recovery process is otherwise straightforward, and you can return to your normal activities beginning the day after the procedure.

Kybella Results

Your Kybella results will gradually emerge after you receive your injections and will continue to improve with each subsequent session. The deoxycholic acid will work to destroy the fat cells, which are then naturally and safely metabolized by the body. Once destroyed, fat cells will not return. This means that the new contour of your chin and neck area will have excellent longevity.
